As you say, it was born out of necessity, to create a name from the letters left over after "Tom Riddle" was cut from "I am Lord Voldermort." Shakespeare's Malvolio wasn't just a fool, he was actually quite unpleasant, and his name means "ill-will." You could twist Marvolo to squeeze "marvelous" out of it, I suppose.
