My personal distaste for their culture aside, Puritans used some very charming names. These are not amongst them. I'm reluctant to say that any name is unusable, because you never know what will become fashionable in the future. But I, for one, would not be sorry to see these go. And yes, these are all first names as far as I know.

I quite like Sabbath (let's not forget Witches' Sabbaths -- or the group Black Sabbath for that matter :D), and although Kerenhappuch is ugly, it does shorten to the appealing Keren.
ReplyDeletePostumus isn't specifically a Puritan name; it was used generally for children born after the death of their father -- one of the most famous bearers is Agrippa Postumus, one of the (Pagan) grandsons of the Emperor Augustus. He's quite nicely portrayed in Robert Graves' I Claudius, so I've always had rather a soft spot for the name (not that I'd ever wish to use it!).
Anyway, what a cheerful bunch those Puritans were! As a thanksgiving present, here's a clip from our brilliant Horrible Histories, which does include a bit on Puritan names:

ReplyDeleteAdulterina - a feminized version of "adult" or a play on adultery? Either way, Addie's right on trend ;)
ReplyDeleteRevolt is an odd virtue name - I mean it doesn't sound particularly virtuous.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't too far off Revolution, which I could see getting modern use.
